Comic books like Watchmen and Kick-Ass ask: What would happen if superheroes existed in the real world? Watchmen suggested we’d get sociopaths. Kick-Ass said they’d be weirdos who walk the line between neighborhood watch and vigilante. In reality, some people do dress up and patrol streets, occasionally fighting crime. But is it possible for an actual comic book hero to exist in real life?
Cancel culture is a buzz term we can’t escape these days. Ban, ignore, refuse or deny anything and it’s a victim of cancel culture rightly or wrongly. But the concept of banning things is hardly a new one. We’ve done it just short of forever. Even music is unable to escape the cold, callused hand of the ban hammer.
The Middle Ages lasted a long time… and probably felt even longer. Historians generally recognize the period as beginning with the fall of Rome at the end of the 5th century AD. Then, it lasted all the way through the middle of the 15th century—give or take a few decades. As you might imagine, quite a few things changed during this long cultural epoch. But there was at least one constant then, too: life really, really sucked.
Red light districts, a center of sin, sexual vice, and debauchery, are where many go to unwind, escape reality, and indulge in their greatest pleasures. Legalized prostitution, drinking, and every vice imaginable lay within a few mere city blocks. Along with it come organized crime, violence, and sordid tales that are seemingly incredulous yet true. Red light districts have been the dirty underbelly of humankind since the days of Sodom and Gomorra and very possibly before.
Over the years, many commonplace activities have been declared illegal in England. While the reasoning behind these bans may have made sense to some at the time, many of them seem absurd, impractical, or downright silly to us today.
Are you the kind of person who is worried about what they eat from day to day? Do you count your calories to make sure you’re not going overboard, or do you just kind of eat whatever until you’re not hungry anymore?
The modern video game industry is a billion dollar juggernaut, but the road that brought us here isn’t without its share of bumps. These mostly come in the form of controversies that contributed towards a negative image that still lingers around gaming today.
We’ve done a list on mental illness in other animals, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As it turns out, we’re nowhere near as unique as greedy religious nutjobs had your ancestors believe; we’re not even the only ones with religion.
During the 2012 presidential election less than 56% of eligible Americans cast votes. Two years later the mid-term elections saw only 36% participation by voters. The lack of participation of so many eligible voters has led to a growing movement in the United States to make voting in national, state, and local elections mandatory, a condition which already exists in more than two dozen countries around the world. As with all things political in this day and age, the issue is a divisive one.
